What about YOU?

What exactly is Self-Care? I’m glad you asked. The meaning is in the phrase “CARE FOR SELF.” Self-Care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you (By Katie Reed).

When is the last time you enjoyed a “TIME OUT” and just spent time with YOU. I know it may sound strange, but if you do not enjoy spending time with you, why should anyone else. I’ve always been told that women are natural nurturers. We are the glue that puts things together and make sure they stick. But what they failed to tell us, is that in the process of making sure EVERYTHING is “fixed” and EVERYONE “has what they need,” our needs would be placed on the “I’ll get to me later list” and eventually that list would vanish. And the cost we pay for putting ourselves last, is our needs, our dreams, our desires and sometimes our hopes also VANISH! Or should I say, they never really vanish, we just CHOOSE not to make them a PRIORITY!

As I got older (wiser), I learned that in order to nurture those around me, I must first learn to nurture myself. And no, it’s not selfish or narcissistic. Many of the challenges we as women face today is a result of NOT TAKING CARE OF US!! The dictionary defines self-care as the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness. Did you catch that? YOU are responsible for protecting your OWN well-being and happiness. It’s not anyone else’s responsibility to take care of YOUR well-being or make YOU happy! We have to be INTENTIONAL! We have to make time for the things we enjoy, like spending time with friends, going for walks, reading a book or just taking a nap (this is my favorite).

I know life can get busy and you have so many responsibilities. Trust me, I can relate. The very fact that you give so much of yourself, is the reason why you have to pour back into YOU. This is why it’s so imperative that we take care of us. One thing I know for sure, if I don’t practice my own self-care I will LOSE ME! And that is a price I am not willing to pay.

Love yourself - and love your life.
